Voltaren Emulgel (previously called Nupron, or Diclofenac) is a gel that has the same active ingredient as acalideris topical gel (previously called Diclofenac) but is applied to the skin instead of the systemic medication. It is commonly used to treat painful conditions such as arthritis, eczema and periodontal disease. Voltaren Emulgel is available in several different formulations, including patches, gels, creams, sprays, andioscral suspensions.
Voltaren Emulgel was first marketed under the brand name Voltaren Gel in 1969. The product was the first topical medication available in a gel form. Voltaren Emulgel became significantly cheaper, and in the years that followed it became popular as a pain relief medication. In the 1980s, Merck & Co. launched a generic version called Diclofenac in the United States. Since then, generic Voltaren Emulgel has become popular as a treatment for periodontal conditions such as gingivitis and inflammation. Generic Voltaren Emulgel has not been shown to have any specific anti-inflammatory properties and does not cause systemic side effects like oral diclofenac does.
Voltaren Emulgel is to be applied once a day, preferably before a meal, at the same time each day. It is usually recommended to apply the gel four times a day, on the first application, for at least three days, at a time. Do not apply more often than every four hours. The gel should be thoroughly dry on the affected area and avoid touching the treated areas with a dry surface such as a towel or finger.
